Our list is updated each year through The NANPA data. Area Codes were first established in the early 1940's by AT&T and they were implemented in 1947. Originally the system was setup for the United States and Canada.

USA states and Canadian provinces were each asigned a 3 digit code with a 0 as the middle number. Eight-six area codes were first assigned. Large Metropolitan areas, such as the New York area, were given numbers with the addition of the numberal 1 in the middle digit. According to the population of the city, the first and third digits were changed accordingly. High population areas, such as New York City and Los Angeles, were assigned low 3 digit numbers as area codes because of the high number of the population. It was thought that the high populated areas should have easier dialing area codes.

The NANP is a shortened term for the North American Number Plan. This is the body that manages North American telephone numbers on public switched networks in regions where the international country code is �1�. That includes the US and it's territories, Canada , and the Caribbean .

Each area code has approximately 7,920,000 phone numbers assigned. Technically, there should be 10 million numbers available but emergency numbers and information numbers make the numbers that are usuable to be less.

As time passed, many area codes were realigned or split so that each region would be certain to have enough numbers to meet its needs. The more telephone lines were required by the growing population and economic growth, greater technologies were developed (such as DID PBX, which allowed direct inward dialing, instead of through a receptionist) as well as faxes, modems, cellular phones, and pagers.

Originally, there were 86 area codes, though Hawaii, Alaska, and the Caribbean were not yet a part of NANP. Today, there are almost 300 area codes.

In July 1994, O.J. Simpson defense lawyers announced a toll-free 800 number in which to call in leads that might help their client's case. Within 24 hours, an unsuspecting El Segundo woman was deluged with 200 of these calls. Her number was the same as the Simpson number except that it was preceded with area code 310.

ATT and the "Baby Bells" used to give a complete area code directory in each of their publications. But, with the rapidly expanding cellular phone business, there was an influx of telephone numbers requested. When states realized that cellular companies had been given too many banks of numbers, the ATT publications quit publishing the area code directory.
