Emancipation Day is celebrated to mark the freedom of the slaves from the tyranny and cruel rule of their white masters. This day was the day to mark the emancipation or freedom from slavery. Now, Emancipation Day is rather celebrated to pray for the freedom of our soul from all the evil effect of ignorance and greed.
Bahamas Emancipation Day History
On The First of August, 1834, the revolution in Bahamas led to the freedom of the black people from the tyrannous rule of the White British Empire. The Bahamas, which is known to be a Nation of Black people to the world nowadays, were once under the rule of the British Empire. However, their courage and unity had earned them their very precious freedom. So, they observe a holiday on the August 1 and put out a grand celebration on the 1st Monday of the month of August. After a four Days celebration, the national festival or The Emancipation Day celebration is concluded on the Fox Hill Day. On this Fox Hill Day, all the people of Bahamas come together to remember the sacrifice and the struggle of their ancestors for the liberation from rule of the British Empire.
Bahamas Emancipation Day Traditions and Activities
Emancipation Day is celebrated in Bahamas on the first Monday of the month of August with a great fervour. The celebration is mainly concentrated in the village of Fox Hill village of Nassau, a slave village on the central Bahamas that was perhaps the last Bahamian settlement to get the news of the Independence from the rule of the cruel masters and the success of the Revolution. The Junakoo festival is also celebrated coinciding with the Emancipation Day so that Bahamians get a double chance to celebrate.
The Emancipation day celebration in Bahamas starts with a Road race on the streets of the land so that the people can display their affection for their motherland in some way. Next day, the celebration is followed by a songs and dances performed by leading musicians and artists to signify the importance of the day and commemorate the sacrifice of the martyrs. In these dance forms of the Junakoo festival, the participants compete in a group of about 400 participants wearing paper costumes to the tunes of the pulsating Junakoo music. The final attraction of the celebration is the grand food festival held on the last day of the celebration of the Independence of the land. There are various attractive and delicious Bahamian Recipes on the plates of the people on this day. The other important events of the significant occasion are scrape bands, limbo dancing, folk lore, folk dancing and competitive games like greasy pole and plaiting the pole.
The celebration of Emancipation Day in Bahamas are conducted and funded by the national government and tourists from all over the globe are welcomed to this 4 days event that signifies and withhold natural culture and tradition. One can reach Bahamas mainly by Sea route. Nassau is an important port on the land and there are cars available on rent for the tourist to travel around the island.
