Myanmar Armed Forces Day: March 27

Armed Forces Day is a public holiday in Myanmar.

Myanmar observes the celebration of Myanmar Armed Forces Day on the 27th of March each year. This day is locally known as ‘Tatmadaw Nay’ and it commemorates the resistance of Burma’s military against the Japanese forces at the height of the Second World War in 1945.

To date, the Tatmadaw is the most powerful, stable, and disciplined institution in Burma (present day Myanmar).

Bangladesh Marks Independence Day

Independence Day of Bangladesh: March 26

Independence Day is a public holiday in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh commemorates its independence from Pakistan every year on the 26th of March. The linguistic barrier and widespread and long term economic seclusion of the region from Pakistan led to the establishment of a new republic which is currently known as the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The war of independence leading to the creation of a free Bengali state took place on March 26, 1971.

Mali Observes Martyr’s Day

Martyr’s Day of Mali: March 26

Martyr’s Day is a public holiday in Mali

Mali commemorates the tragic democratic demonstration happened on March 22, 1991 and the deposition of the then head of state Moussa Traoré. Hundreds of protesters, mostly student (around 3000), were killed during the demonstration by assaults by the military. Traoré was convicted and sentenced to death but was pardoned as part of the country’s attempt to national reconciliation and healing. This day is also called Democracy Day.

Fiji Observes the Celebration of National Youth Day

Fiji’s National Youth Day: March 26

National Youth Day is a public holiday in Fiji.

To commemorate the active contribution of the youth in nation-building, Fiji celebrates National Youth Day in March every year. The actual date may vary for purpose making people enjoy a longer weekend but usually set on the last Monday of March. The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports designates the actual date as to which the National Youth Day should be celebrated. The holiday is considered to be one of the most important dates in Fiji’s holiday calendar.

The British Summer Time (BST): UK’s Daylight Saving Time (DST)

Lunar Summertime in UK: March 25

In contrast with the US and Canada where their clocks are adjusted one hour forward on the second week of March and reverted back to the standard time on the first week of November, UK observes British Summer Time (BST) by putting their timepieces an hour forward the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) beginning on the last Sunday of March until the last Sunday of the month of October of the same year.

Daylight Saving Time (DST) the equivalent of BST in the US. Changes to official timepieces in UK are done on 1 am GMT.
