Emancipation Day is a public holiday in Grenada.

The history of Grenada goes back to1498. At that time, the island tribes called it Camahogne. Later on, English failed their attempts of first settlement. However, Grenada was conquered and fought and conquered by the French from Caribs circa in 1650. Grenada was the province of a short-lived West Indies Federation during 1958 – 1962. In 1967, the island of Grenada attained the status of “Associated State of the United Kingdom”. This meant that island was now solely responsible for their internal affairs. Again, UK was given the responsibility for the defense alongside foreign affairs. She achieved independence under Sir Eric Matthew Gairy, who was the leader of the then Premier. He later was declared to be the Grenada’s first Prime Minister.
