However, the day is officially referred by this name in the Nunavut and the northwestern territories. The day is a mandatory holiday in these parts of the countries only. The names of the civic holidays in Canada are different in different municipalities and provinces of most parts of the country. It is known as the “British Columbia Day” in the British Columbia, “New Brunswick Day” in the New Brunswick and “Saskatchewan Day in the Saskatchewan. In certain region of the country, such as Alberta, it is the optional civic holiday that is known as “Heritage Day”. In 1990, this day was downgraded from the compulsory holiday to an optional one.
