Colombia Independence Day History
Spanish discovery, conquest and colonization of Colombia began sometime during the late fifteenth-early sixteenth centuries. Ever since the periods of conquest and colonization, there had been several rebellions against the Spanish rule, but most of them were too weak and were easily crushed. The last such rebellion demanded total independence from Spain; this rebel movement led by Simon Bolivar sprang up in 1810, following the 1804 independence of St. Domingue (now Haiti). St. Domingue provided considerable support to this rebellion, and it finally achieved success on 7th August, 1819 by the Battle of Boyaca, fought against the armies of the Spanish king, after which the Republic of Colombia was formed out of the territory of the Viceroyalty of New Granada.
