Lady of the Angels Day is a public holiday in Costa Rica.
The country of Costa Rica celebrates the event of “Our Lady of Angels” on the 2nd of August every year. The Cartago city in Costa Rica is the centre of attraction for the celebration. It is the place where the main church of the Our Lady of the Angels is located.
Our Lady of the Angels Day History
It is believed that this church is the main site for appearance of a girl called La Negrita, who was found beside a holy rock. She was a young native girl, who appeared in 1635 in the Cartago city. The rock is considered as holy in the eyes of people and also an object of inspiration. It is kept beside the Brasilica. Although the location of the church was not moved from its place, but the rock had to be moved from its place when the church was moved, as it was totally destroyed by a series of earthquakes and volcanic eruption.
Our Lady of the Angels Day Traditions and Activities
On this day, the people of Cartago city as well the citizens of Costa Rica bend on their Kneels and cover a quarter of a mile in this way. According to the famous ideology, Lady of Angels has healing powers and thus the visitors are usually those, who are ill or want a part of their powers to grant their wish. The people have this faith from a very long time and that this faith will keep them alive for a longer period of time.
The celebration of the day is huge. People go out in the streets and sing and dance to their traditional songs that have been done so from the past history. With the colonial invasion of the foreign countries on Costa Rica, the importance as well as the enthusiasm of the event was lost. However after the independence, the event has yet again reached the same kind of enthusiasm within the country.
People suffering from any kind of problems ask for the virgins help and in return, the virgin answers by relieving their sorrows. People have a great belief for the church and a huge following. Though only a day is used for celebrating this occasion, yet the day sees some spectacular events. The Cartago city specially enjoys this attention, as it has the location of the church itself. The people from all over the world comes in hopes of their problems being removed and that a helping hand will come from the virgins side.
The celebration has influenced the culture of the country and further, they have some of the most extensively developed churches in the world. The country has also been in the lime light for this sheer reason in the holy news all around the world. The believers just keep on growing every year, which can be seen by looking at the increased numbers of registered visitors in the church. Thus, the church not only holds a historic place, but also is a holy one. This event is also celebrated as a national holiday in the country of Costa Rica.
