National Day is celebrated by Cameroon.

Cameroon National Day is an important Day for the history of the country, it indicates honour and pride.

National Day History

Complete independence was not granted to largely colonised Cameroon until 1972. The Republic of Cameroon as it was known now celebrates National Day on May 20th. Way back in 1972 on this day the constitution of the united republic of Cameroon was adopted by the Union Nationale Camerounaise lead by Ahmadou Ahidjo. The constitution was amended under the leadership of Paul Biya Cameroon was provided with its present day name.

Cameroon is rich in culture and traditional art and crafts and actually has over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups. A claim to fame is the performance of the Cameroon national football team who have been performing at world level for years.The Union Nationale Camerounaise has controlled the governing of the country from Yaounde the capital city since 1972 till today and is now renamed Cameroon Peoples Democratic Movement.

National Day Traditions and Activities

The National Day celebrations include parades involving public officials and party loyalists dressed in commemorative clothing with party insignia, school children and dance troupes. Cameroon students union also organises Annual National Week awareness programmes including various cultural activities.
