Liberty Day Date: Aug 3

Liberty Day is a public holiday in Equatorial Guinea.

A Constitution of a country is a set of regulations for the administration of that country. The functioning of a government in any country is highly dependent on the country’s Constitution as it specifies the powers, functions, responsibilities and duties of the government and also specifies the rights and duties of citizens of the country. The Constitution of a country may be codified (that is, contained in a single document) or uncodified, and it may be written or it may be unwritten. Uruguay has a codified, written Constitution.

Equatorial Guinea Liberty Day History

In Uruguay, Constitution Day is celebrated on July 18. Uruguay is not the only country to celebrate a Constitution Day- a specific day to commemorate the signing, promulgation or adoption of the Constitution of a particular country is observed in several countries of the world. The Constitution Day of Uruguay is officially known as Jura de la ConstituciĂłn de la RepĂşblica Oriental del Uruguay. Constitution Day has been observed in Uruguay since 1830, when Uruguay adopted its first Constitution. Presently, it commemorates the Constitution of 1951, which established a collegiate form of government in the country.

Equatorial Guinea Liberty Day Traditions and Activities

Constitution Day is a public holiday in Uruguay. Normally, the country’s President, Vice-President, ministers, legislators and common citizens attend the celebrations. The celebrations are marked by playing of the national anthem and speeches made by political leaders. The media coverage of the Constitution Day in Uruguay is exhaustive.

Apart from the official celebrations, there are social events organised by the citizens to commemorate the day. Races, parades, rallies, marathons and marches are common events. Participation in such activities is not compulsory, but citizens participate willingly since this is a day of great national pride and glory and commemoration of this day by the citizens of Uruguay is natural. Also, this is a wonderful occasion for the citizens of the country to interact with their fellow countrymen.

Trinidad & Tobago Emancipation Day Date: August 3

Trinidad & Tobago celebrates Emancipation Day as a public holiday.

Emancipation Day is celebrated in many nations in the Americas. The dates do vary from country to country. This is because of the difference in the date on which they accepted or implemented the emancipation policy and abolished slavery. Thus, emancipation day is the day on which slavery was banned and all the slaves got freedom, which was like unbelievable truth for them. The slavery practice was one of the long practices in Americas, where mostly Africans were slaved, for different work purposes. The emancipation day is celebrated on August 1 every year in Trinidad and Tobago.

Trinidad & Tobago Emancipation Day History

An emancipation bill was first created in the year 1833. In this year, a bill was passed by the government in order to get all the slaves free, but they were not slaved and got emancipated. That was enough to bring joy and celebrations for all the slaves in America. However, news was in the air that complete freedom would be granted to those slaves, who will be accept to be apprenticed to their former master for minimum of 4 years. However, very soon the system of slavery was abolished, which provided the slaves with complete freedom.

On August 1, 1985, Trinidad and Tobago became the first country to offer national holiday in order to celebrate the auspicious day of emancipation, commonly called emancipation Day. Thus, the day is celebrated with great Zeal and Enthusiasm throughout the country. The abolishment of slavery was well accepted and celebrated in every country.

Trinidad & Tobago Emancipation Day Traditions and Activities

Emancipation Day has great significance all over the world. The slavery system, which was in-human as well as unkind, got abolished. It was one of the most important and vital changes that occurred. The slaves in Trinidad were great in numbers. There were several states in Trinidad which were operated by slaves. The average slave’s number was 7 and 24 in the country respectively. Thus, abolishment of slavery was not to be welcomed in Trinidad and Tobago so well, but eventually it was welcomed very properly. Not only welcomed, but it is celebrated and today, counted amongst one of the countries, which offer public holiday on this auspicious Day.

Thus, abolishment of slavery on the emancipation day brought several impacts to the society. It bridged up the huge gap between human, which could have widened if it would not have been there. This is the reason why it has so much importance. The day has its own significances all over the world. The day is celebrated remembering all those great people who gave in their great contribution, and thus got this greatest act of kindness done.

Apart from kindness, the Emancipation Day also helped in bringing up equality amongst people. Thus, it helped in binding people together for the betterment and enlistment of the country. We all know that if slavery was practiced till today, our world would have never developed up to this level, and would have been much behind than its present level.

Commerce Day Date: August 3

Iceland celebrates Commerce Day as a public holiday.

Fridagur verslunarmanna, as it is known in Iceland, is celebrated in the first Monday of the month of August. It is celebrated as the holiday of the tradesman of the Iceland. Stock exchange celebrates this event with great vigor. It was a marked event in which the lower tradesmen class of Iceland got freedom from the upper authorities of the market business and their atrocities. It is also celebrated in honor of the great fighters, who made this possible. Tradesmen along with their family observe the day by not undergoing any business and celebrating the day with passion and kind.

Iceland Commerce Day History

This event has markedly affected the culture of Iceland and not only the tradesmen, but other classes of people also celebrate this day with enthusiasts. They attire themselves in either traditional or fashionable clothes and roam about the streets, distributing commodities that are considered valuables in the country.

Stock brokers, as well as all the working class within the Iceland Stock Exchange, are situated in Kaupholl, the economic centre of the country. The Stock Exchange centre observes a closing economic ceremony on this day. The stock brokers celebrate this event with adrenalin. The Stock Exchange is also beautifully decorated and wonderful lightening is done in the night.

The event started somewhere in between mid of the eighteenth century and nineteenth century. This year the day is being celebrated on August 3. The days of the celebration are movable as according to the convenience of the Stock Exchange related people. However, it is always celebrated within the first week of August only. The celebration has some of the most vivid features including friendly competition within the brokers. Again, this is the day in which the atrocities of the upper class was finally ended, so the brokers also undertake a drama in the Stock Exchange signifying the events that led to the celebration of the event.

Iceland Commerce Day Traditions and Activities

The celebration of Commerce Day is done in the first Monday of the month of august. Thus, the tentative day is always a Monday. This has also a history according to which the freedom was received in the first Monday of the month of the August. The Tradesmen of the Iceland country has a marked closeness to this day. Thus, the celebration has broken territorial boundaries and now Icelander all over the world celebrates the Commerce Day.

European Countries too are making it mandatory to keep a day off in the Stock Exchange of the economic centre and that day can be celebrated as a Commerce Day similar to what Iceland does every year. Thus, it is very much evident that this day is of great importance to the people of Iceland. At the celebration time, families are also involved in order to further increase the celebration zest of the Commerce Day. Thus, this day has greatly influenced the culture and the people of the country of Iceland.

Niger Independence Day Date: August 3

Niger celebrates Independence Day as a public holiday.

Niger celebrates its Independence Day on August 3rd every year. Independence Day is that day when a country either gets independence from a foreign ruling organization or from a domestic ruler. Independence Day has its own values and it is one of the greatest days for every country. Thus, it is celebrated with great joy as well as respect.

Niger Independence Day History

Niger got independence from France on August 3, 1960. Niger was under France’s control for a long span of time. French does tried a lot to spread their territory throughout the parts, but they failed in capturing Agadez, which is the southern part of the country. Again, they had to face a strong opposition from Taurag. After that, the French kept on moving their strategies and capital in Niger. They even proclaimed Niger to be a military state. However in 1960, the country got complete independence from the French control.

Niger is one of the most populated countries of the Continent Africa. Thus, it has its own significance. Not only from the fields of population, but it is good on the basis of economy also. It is one of the fastest growing nations in the world. The importance of Independence Day is huge in Niger. The proof of this is that along with the Independence Day, they also celebrate Arbor’s Day. On this day, they plant a lot of trees in order to fight the growing desertification. Along with that it also contributes in fighting the growing global warming, and green house effect all over the globe.

Niger Independence Day Traditions and Activities

The celebrations of Independence Day in Niger are full of enjoyment and fun for every citizen. This day has wide significance in Niger. One of the biggest reasons being that it is one of those festivals (for the people of Niger, it is like Festival), which helps in binding up people together. This is the reason that this day is celebrated with so much excitement. The country Niger is widely diversified on the basis of languages and ethnicity. However, this occasion brings all of them together and helps them in enjoying their freedom together.

The freedom is not earned very easily; rather it is earned with a lot of hardships and fights. Many have lost their life in order to achieve the freedom. Thus, the Nigerian Independence day celebration is not complete without remembering those freedom fighters, who sacrificed their life in order to get their countrymen free. Hence, they are remembered every year on this auspicious occasion.

Niger freedom fighters are not only the ones, who greatly contributed in the freedom struggle, but are also the ones, who inspired the people to go for the freedom struggle and get their country free from the French. Without their inspiration, Niger would have still been a slave country to France. The people of Niger are well aware of these facts and hence they never fail in remembering these great freedom fighters and leaders.

Freedom Day Date: August 3

Guyana celebrates Freedom Day as a public holiday.

Guyana has Atlantic Ocean, Suriname, Venezuela and Brazil covering four of its sides. It was originally a home of the Amerindians. However, Dutch annexed it in the 16th century and then it was juggled between the Dutch, French and British from the second part of the 16th to the 19th century. It was finally captured by Britain in 1814. Guyana earned freedom in 1966. May 26, 1966 marks the date of the state’s independence from colonialism, whereas the freedom day is celebrated on August 1 every year. This year, since August 1 is on a Saturday, Monday, August 3 is celebrated.

Guyana Freedom Day History

Freedom Day or Emancipation Day is celebrated in Guyana on August 1. Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, as it was earlier called, marks the abolition of slavery in 1834.

The end of the abolitionism brought about a new phase in Guyana; the villages started getting established, there was a struggle of the trade union movement and the opening of the hinterland through the pork knockers. Thus, there was an opening for civil services and artesian shops. Freedom Day kicked off indentured labor, which attracted the Portuguese, Chinese and East Indians to the country.

With the fall of slavery, there was a radical change in the colonial life. By 1838, the overall emancipation had come into action. The end of slavery had sparked several changes. Many former slaves swiftly departed the British plantation. Some of them shifted to villages and towns with a feeling that the field labor was inconsistent and degrading with freedom, whereas others accumulated their resources for purchasing the estates, which were abandoned, and helped in the creation of village societies.

Setting up of small settlements offered new communities constituting Afro-Guyanese people. They were given a chance to grow plants and sell the food themselves. Emancipation also had an effect in the start of many new ethnic groups in British Guyana. The count of Chinese people coming into the colony in between 1853 & 1912 was around 14,000.

Similar to the Portuguese ancestors, Chinese forsook plantations for retail trades and quickly were assimilated into the Guyanese communities. Such was the effect of the declaration of emancipation or “freedom”.

Guyana Freedom Day Traditions and Activities

Freedom Day is marked as an important day, not only in the Guyanese calendar, but also on the entire global perspective. What established as a trading link or an open door policy in Guyana in 1830s has now taken up a global outlook.

Of the various positive effects of the announcement of emancipation, one was that it brought a significant end to slavery. It also boosted liberalization of trade. Today, Freedom day is celebrated in varied forms and flavor. It is no more confined to the freedom of slavery but, now, has widespread wings in almost every sphere of work. From the field of press to software to economic activities, Freedom Day has a different meaning to every sphere. For instance, there is separate software Freedom Day celebrated worldwide on September 27.

Similarly there also exists World Press Freedom Day, which is celebrated on May 3. The celebrations of Freedom Day, therefore, vary from sector to sector. In the lands of Guyana, August 1 is still celebrated as Freedom [Emancipation] Day and is observed as a public holiday. There is no overwhelming celebration on this date, but it has sheer significance and value for the Guyanese people…..and the world alike.

Equatorial Guinea Armed Force Day Date: August 3

Armed Force Day is a public holiday in Equatorial Guinea.

Armed force day is one those days, which is celebrated in many countries in order to respect their military organizations together. On this day, all the divisions of the defense together are respected for their huge devotion and dedication towards the country. Though different military organization have their own day, such as Army Day, Air Force Day, Navy Day etc, but the Armed forces Day together celebrates the achievement of all these branches of defense. The armed Forces Day is celebrated on August 3rd every year in Equatorial Guinea.

Equatorial Guinea Armed Force Day History

The military history of Equatorial Guinea is not very great. The military has been reorganized several times for the betterment and more effectiveness and no doubt, the results were successful and fruitful. The total number of people serving in the Armed forces amounts to 2500 only. Out of these 2500, 1400 are in Army, 200 in the navy, 400 are deployed as Paramilitary police and the air force comprises of only 120 service people. Basically, the army is not trained up to the requirements of the present day, and neither are they equipped with the latest versions of arms and ammunitions.

The present armed forces of Equatorial Guinea are equipped with the arms, which are light and small. The arms include small arms, RPGs, and Mortars. The forces are not equipped with latest heavy arms. The light armored vehicles and trucks are all soviet style and do not run or work properly. The armed forces also contain another division called Gendarmerie. The numbers of this division is not known and are trained by the help of French Military cooperation. Thus the armed force of Equatorial Guinea are not very well trained and are not self sufficient to operate, and thus rely on foreigners to operate. The number of paved aerodromes, number of working aircrafts etc are all very less. They acquire various ammunitions and warfare vehicles from foreign countries.

Equatorial Guinea Armed Force Day Traditions and Activities

In spite of having a bad military record the armed forces day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Equatorial Guinea. There is no lack of celebration for the armed forces. Though small in number, they are felicitated well on that auspicious day. The armed forces are said to be the most devotional and dedicated work men. This is the reason they are so much respected. The lifestyle they live comprises of discipline and honor, and the hardship they undergo, is because of the countrymen. Thus, on this one day, they are respected thoroughly for their kind devotion in front of all those for whom they take up all those pains. The celebration includes a felicitation ceremony where these men are honored and respected, followed by a huge and grand dinner in the name of the Armed Forces. The whole country gets a public holiday on this day, and the armed forces men enjoy together. They meet, they eat, they drink, for one day they lay the burden of responsibility away from their shoulders and enjoy to their utmost level and why should not they? They have also the right to live for themselves, but they live for others more than they live for themselves.

Grenada Emancipation Day Date: August 3

Emancipation Day is a public holiday in Grenada.

The history of Grenada goes back to1498. At that time, the island tribes called it Camahogne. Later on, English failed their attempts of first settlement. However, Grenada was conquered and fought and conquered by the French from Caribs circa in 1650. Grenada was the province of a short-lived West Indies Federation during 1958 – 1962. In 1967, the island of Grenada attained the status of “Associated State of the United Kingdom”. This meant that island was now solely responsible for their internal affairs. Again, UK was given the responsibility for the defense alongside foreign affairs. She achieved independence under Sir Eric Matthew Gairy, who was the leader of the then Premier. He later was declared to be the Grenada’s first Prime Minister.

Grenada Emancipation Day History

Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, as it was formerly called, originally came into being in Guyana. It marked the end of slavery of the blacks and non-whites under the whites. It is the public holiday, which is for celebrating abolition of the slavery in the country. Although it is officially acknowledged worldwide to be August 1, Grenada Emancipation Day gets celebrated during August’s first Monday. It is a day filled with joy and colors of life in the little island nation. Cultural activities are planned for Carriacou and Grenada. Emancipation Day marked a new beginning in the history, especially economic, of Grenada. With the end of slavery the overwhelming dominance of the British was significantly reduced in the island nation. It also encouraged the Chinese, Portuguese and East Indians to come to the country.

Grenada Emancipation Day Traditions and Activities

Emancipation Day is a public holiday in Grenada. Banks and most shops remain closed. This joyous day is celebrated on August, 2009. This day is of special importance to the citizens of Grenada because it is on this day that they got their total independence. Even after their independence, slavery had continued in the country until the announcement of emancipation, thus providing them with total freedom.

On every Emancipation Day, the Prime Minster of Grenada delivers a speech speaking highly of the economic welfare and progress of the country, the development of its financial sector, development of relations with foreign countries, and most importantly of the welfare of the common man. This day is celebrated very colorfully and in a grand manner in the country. People throng the streets in huge numbers. This day is a carnival of fun and joy in Grenada. From morning on Emancipation Monday, Grenada’s streets are totally filled with masqueraders depicting the devils and the social commentaries of previous year. They are accompanied by dances and sounds of steel bands and DJ’s music, which play at the latest carnival. Later on in the evening, the bands put on a brief show followed by lots of fun dancing and waving of bright lights. In fact, Grenada carnival celebrations are quite a common spectacle on almost every public holidays and occasions. It shows the colorful and fun-loving nature of the folk of Grenada.

Guinea-Bissau observes Colonization Martyrs’ Day as a public holiday.

Colonization Martyr’s Day is observed as an anniversary of the killings of Pidjiguiti — a day of remembrance of the brave martyrs of the nation.

Guinea-Bissau Colonization Martyrs’ Day History

Guinea-Bissau is a country of the western African continent on Atlantic Ocean. Populated by the Malinke, Fulani and other people from West Africa, Portuguese were the first ones to visit the country during the 15th century. Later on, it became one of the Portuguese colonies (1879).

The history of Guinea-Bissau was dominated by Portugal from the 1450s to 1970s. Since independence, the country has been primarily controlled by a single-party system. Portuguese conquest and the consolidation of country’s interior did not start till the last half of 19th century. This was the time, when Portuguese lost a portion of the island to the French from West Africa. The struggle for independence was started in 1956 by PAIGC (African Party for Independence of Guinea & Cape Verde).

In 1961, it started the armed rebellion against Portuguese. After repeated pressure from the PAIGC, the Portuguese finally met their downfall in 1974. Following Carnation Revolution in April 1974 at Portugal, the country granted independence for the Guinea-Bissau on the September 10th of 1974. Half-brother of Amílcar Cabral, Luís Cabral, was the Guinea-Bissau’s first president.

Colonization Martyr’s Day is observed as an anniversary of the killings of Pidjiguiti. It is celebrated on August 3. It is marked as a day of remembrance of the brave martyrs of the nation. It originates from the Pidjiguiti massacre of 1959. The PAIGC launched their first major movement by instigating the dock-workers strike for better salaries. They did it at Pijiguiti Docks in the Guinea’s Port of Bissau on August 3, 1959.

The P.I.D.E. (political police) suppressed this strike, open wild fire on striking workers and killed more than 50 people. The political authorities put the entire blame on the PAIGC for framing discontentment among the poor, absent-minded workers. However, the loss had already occurred; more than 50 families lost their working heads. It urged a national trauma, which would never be fully cured. That traumatic day of August 3, 1959 is observed nationwide as the Colonization Martyr’s Day.

Guinea-Bissau Colonization Martyrs’ Day Traditions and Activities

The Colonization Martyr’s Day is marked as a public holiday in Guinea-Bissau. There are no real celebrations on this day in the country. It is a day of national grief for the citizens of the nation. People on this day, mourn the Pidjiguiti massacre. They light candles and torch processions are a common feature of this day.

In remembrance of the departed souls, they also observe 5 minutes of nationwide silence. On this date, the President of the state delivers a speech, which is telecasted live on a nationwide scale. Here, he passionately remembers the sacrifices of the martyrs of the country and also talks about the economic and military upgrade of Guinea-Bissau. Gradually over the years the people have come to terms to the loss….which still pains.

Dominica August Monday Date: August 2

August Monday is a public holiday in Dominica.

Dominica, popularly called the Nature Island of the Caribbean, follows the motto of “After the good Lord, we follow the earth”. So, the worshippers of the Mother Nature like to celebrate their independence and mark the special day with something “Special”. So, on the First Monday of the month of August, Dominicans celebrate to mark their emancipation from the British rule and rise of a new era in the history of world civilization.

Dominica August Monday History

The islands of Dominica were originally inhabited by the natives of America. When Christopher Columbus discovered America, Dominica was added to the world map in 1493. During the 18th century, the island witnessed rise and fall of many empires, but finally The British Empire had a tight hold over the island by 1805. In 1960, the Leeward and the Windward Island were put together to constitute the nation of Dominica. The sacrifice of the martyrs of Dominica was successful when the British Empire decided to withdraw their rule from the native state of Dominica after a long and arduous struggle by the Dominicans and give them an independent identity on 3rd November, 1968.

Under the initiative of Juan Pablo Duarte, a secret society by the name of La Trinataria was found and they fought for the complete independence of the islands. Ramon and Sanchez aided Duarte in the cause to attain their dear independence from the tyrannous rule of the white masters. On the February of 1844, the Dominicans declared their independence from Haiti. They had support from affluent native from different part of the lands. However, finally after century of many tyranny, segregation, domination and rapid change in the political ruling scenario of the country, it was able to achieve its true independence only recently.

Dominica August Monday Traditions and Activities

The August Monday is celebrated by the people of Dominica to mark the departure of the British Empire and the rise of the Independent state rule by a democratic government. The August Monday Celebration is held with great pomp across the island nation with numerous participants participating in music and dance shows and competing with each other. The effervescent music and the fascinating dances are performed by hundreds of participants in groups, each clad in paper costumes. There are sports to enhance and promote national brotherhood and integrity among the people of Dominica. The four days celebration of the liberation from foreign rule is ended with a grand social luncheon.

The August Monday Celebration in the island nation of Dominica is a government initiative and held every year by the ruling party for their respective 5 year terms.
