Khao Phansaa, the indisputably largest festival in Laos, Thailand and marks the beginning of the much awaited rainy season, with warmth and welcome. The festival is colloquially termed as wan khao phan saa , meaning “the of entering of the rainy season”. Thus, starting from that very first showery day of the year, it lasts for a delightful period of 3 consecutive months.

The Buddhist festival Dharma Day celebrates the day the Buddhist religion became established, also known as Asalha Puja Day. After gaining enlightenment at Buddha-Gaya on the full moon of Visakha, the lord Buddha was at peace with himself. Two months later at the Deer Park near Benares he delivered his first sermon to his first five disciples, Kondann, Vappa, Bhaddiya, Mahanam and Assiji on the full moon of Asalha on the eighth lunar month. Buddha Day is celebrated by Buddhists worldwide.

Visakha Puja or Buddha day is the most significant day in the Buddhist calendar, celebrating the three most important incidents in the life of the Buddha, his birth, the enlightenment and the death which all occurred on this day. Its a moveable day falling on the first full moon in May the fifth month except in leap year when it falls in June.
