Turkmenistan Independence Day: October 28

Turkmenistan celebrates Independence Day as a public holiday.

Independence Day in Turkmenistan is a public holiday. Turkmenistan celebrates, on October 28, the anniversary of becoming an Independent Nation.

History of Turkmenistan Independence Day

Turkmens came into commercial contacts with Russians as early as the 16th century; by the 18th century almost all trade between Europe and Central Asia passed through Turkmenistan. As part of the Great Game of the 18th and 19th centuries, the local tribes were used diplomatically by the Persians, Russians, and the British.

In 1865, Russia undertook direct annexation, which because of heavy resistance by the Turkmen tribesmen was not complete until the 1885, making Turkmenistan the last portion of the Russian Empire to be conquered. Turkmenistan’s nationalist opposition resisted the Bolsheviks until 1924, when the area was made part of the Trans-Caspian Republic.

The present day Turkmenistan territory became a soviet republic in 1925. By a unanimous vote of its Supreme Soviet, Turkmenistan declared its sovereignty in August 1990. After the August 1991 coup attempt against the Gorbachev regime in Moscow, Turkmenistan’s communist leader Saparmyrat Niyazov called for a popular referendum on independence. The official result of the referendum was 94 percent in favor of independence and thus ending a 69 year association with the Soviet Union. Turkmenistan was declared independent from the Soviet Union and the Republic of Turkmenistan was established on October 27, 1991.
