Travel Warnings, Advisories and Areas of Instability: Sweden has a low crime rate. Violent crime is relatively uncommon. Most crimes involve theft of personal property in public areas or burglary of vacant residences. However, travelers, especially those who appear affluent, can become targets of pickpockets and purse snatchers. The loss or theft of a U.S. passport should be reported immediately to local police and the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Drug Penalties: U.S. citizens are subject to the laws of the country in which they are traveling. Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs are high, and convicted offenders can expect jail sentences and fines.

Other Information: Moving violations, especially speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol, are strictly enforced and fines can be severe.
